The Greater St. Louis Area Council's STEM initiative has been growing since the inception of the NOVA Advancement Program in 2012, awards designed specifically to enhance STEM learning. Our first official STEM event was held in December 2012 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and was titled STEM University. This one-day event drew over 500 youth including Cub Scouts (ages 7-10), Scouts BSA (11-17), and Venturers (14-18). 4 years later, the STEM University concept has grown and is now offered at three more universities (Southeast Missouri State University and Southern Illinois University -- Edwardsville, and Southern Illinois University -- Carbondale). The total youth served through STEM University alone is upwards of 1,100. In addition to our larger events, we offer smaller scale programs including NOVA Days at a local Science Center, STEM-themed camps, STEM days at local colleges and high schools, robotics days, and many more. Through these events and volunteer base of STEM experts, our Council has earned over 10,000 NOVA awards since the inception! (the fastest pace in the country).
